Exactly 425 years ago, the Dutch arrived on Dejima — an artificial island off the coast of Nagasaki — marking the beginning of cultural and trade exchange between the Netherlands and Japan. This historical moment inspired the central concept for the Dutch pavilion at Expo2025: Common Ground. Then, as now, an artificial island serves as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and shared progress.
This was translated into a visual identity centred around a circular, bilingual logo. The logo inspired the pavilion design and all other communication elements. Ranging from animations, merchandise, way finding and even Miffy.
